The Akhal-Teke Shael Gold Cup, a winner in showing off the quintessential Teke
The Akhal-Teke horse is certainly unique in its appearance, the dry and lean horse with long slim necks and exotic heads is often described as the athletic aristocrat of the equine world.
The best examples of this ancient breed, sought after by sheiks, khans, czars and emperors, leave people with an unforgettable impression of majestic grace.
Today these horses, often with the color of pure gold, have become the favourite pet of the Russian socialite.
That is understandable, if you want to show off a creature that combines the elegance of a Bolshoy Ballet prima ballerina with the powerful impression of an attacking lion, you cannot find a better possession.
The heavenly breed is slowly establishing in the west but the lack of really magnificent animals of the quality we see with the Russian jet set has not yet found their way out of Russia.
We see mostly middle level argamaks that are promoted, in vain, as an alternative sport horses to the successful European Warmblood.
With the Shael Gold Cup show the quintessential Teke is presented. More than 1500 people in the awed audience could enjoy two hours of pure beauty. More than 30 magnificent Tekes showed in liberty to suggestive live music.
The horses were judged by breeders, artists and horsemen for breed type and overall appearance. The favourite of the public was voted, it was no surprise that the golden, impressive stallion Duag Shael that won the hearts of the public, while the judges voted the tall, bay stallion Gench as winner, by many experts considered the best stallion of this breed born in the last 15 years.
It was no coincidence that Gench and Duag won the hearts of the judges and public, these horses are carefully selected and bred by two of the world’s most successful breeders, Alexander Klimuk and Leonid Babayev. Considering the high quality of the other Tekes shown at Shael Gold Cup, mr Klimuk and mr Babayev will have to look out for up and coming breeders such as Naib Idris Stud Farm, Daghestan and the Djaparov brothers stud farm, Daghestan.
As a westerner I can only wish for more such horses in the west to promote the heavenly breed.
 
Having been to Akhal-Teke shows in many countries and also arranged shows myself, I consider the Shael Gold Cup concept, to be the best show arranged to really capture and display the true type of the ancient Akhal-Teke.
If you really want to understand what this breed is about. I recommend you to visit the Shael Gold Cup Next year. Maybe if you are lucky, the Shael Gold Cup will be arranged near you. Many sponsors that have been equally impressed by the show are interested in sponsoring the expansion of the Shael Gold Cup concept.
